Lund Cathedral

The Cathedral here in Lund is a great landmark. It has helped me gather my bearing a few times already, and will continue to do so until I know my way around. Otherwise, it is also a very popular tourist attraction.

Its unique quality is the exterior design. It is unlike most cathedrals in that it is less glamor and shine, yet possesses a dark beauty.

Close-up of Stone Work
The stone work is absolutely beautiful and each piece seems to be a unique piece of art.

The interior hall is massive in height, but my camera failed to take pictures in the dimly lit corridors.

There is an old tale for the odd findings in the crypt that goes something like this:
An old priest was put in charge of constructing this monument to his religion. He found the work to be impossible alone, and so, he requested the aid of the local giant troll. The troll agreed to finish the cathedral on one term: if the priest could not guess the troll's name by the time he finished, the troll would gain possession of the priest's eyes. The priest agreed, but soon found the cathedral only days away from completion without the slightest clue as to the name of his helper. Defeated and without hope, the priest wandered the countryside in desperation. To his great fortune, he landed upon a courtyard wherein the troll's family was gathering. They were singing carols about the father troll and praising him for he would soon own the eyes of a priest. However, they were not so discreet to neglect the troll's name.

The priest hurried back to the cathedral yelling "Giant Finn! Giant Finn!" just as the Troll was placing the last stone. In a fit of rage, the troll threw away the final stone, and rushed to the crypt to destroy the cathedral's foundation. Giant Finn began to tug and pull on a main pillar, but he soon began his descent from Giant to mere human size. As, of course, the cathedral was a holy place and would not fall to its creator. To this day, Finn remains in an ongoing struggle to destroy his greatest work.

And here is a man climbing a pillar, carrying a baby on his face. Makes you realize the luxury of a backpack, and contraceptives.

Just a neat looking tombstone
